After The Fires: Lessons in Resiliency from the High Country

In 2013, Ellen Berkovitch studied radio production under Claire Schoen at Duke Center for Documentary Studies (online). The challenge to create a 15-minute fully produced environmental feature led Ellen to locate rancher and logger David Old of Pecos, NM. David Old’s family ranch in Pecos burned down twice in forest fires thirteen years apart to the day. The story of how David Old and son Shiloh Old had begun a small business recycling burned timber for wood flooring after the first fire, and how they dealt with the effects of the second fire on their livelihood, is told in this radio documentary.
